And then they came for me.

I came across this poem in an email I received today.

First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

- German theologian, Martin Niemöller

Aren't we all guilty of this "its not my business" syndrome? Only yesterday we were discussing about the selfish practices which many of us indulge in, which cause untold damage to the environment. We don't care as long as we are not paying for it. When we have paid for a package deal, we waste things, in the false belief that we are somehow "entitled" to do so. But then, all these do come around. We will eventually have to pay for it. Probably many times over. Must check the things I do as well.
